IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION
Owners should be advised to look for signs of hypoglycemia. PROZINC is for cats only. PROZINC Insulin, like other drugs, may cause some serious side effects. Serious side effects can occur with or without warning. Please contact your veterinarian immediately if you think your cat has a medical problem or side effect from ProZinc therapy. The most common insulin-related side effect is low blood glucose (hypoglycemia). Signs of hypoglycemia may occur suddenly and can include: weakness, depression, lethargy, sluggishness, staggering gait, behavioral changes, muscle twitching, seizures, coma, death.

Clinical signs of hypoglycemia were generally mild in nature (described as lethargic, sluggish, weak, trembling, uncoordinated, groggy, glassy-eyed or dazed). What is PROZINC Insulin?
PROZINC insulin is an aqueous protamine zinc suspension of recombinant human insulin that is used to reduce hyperglycemia (high blood glucose or high blood sugar) in cats with diabetes mellitus. A licensed veterinarian must prescribe PROZINC insulin for your cat. PROZINC insulin should be given to cats only. Keep out of reach of children. Seek medical attention immediately if you accidentally inject yourself with PROZINC insulin.

Dr. Nelson received his DVM degree from the University of Minnesota in 1979. He completed a small animal internship at Washington State University in 1980 and a small animal medicine residency at the University of California, Davis in 1982. Dr. Nelson was a professor of small animal medicine at Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine from 1982 to 1989. In 1989, Dr. Nelson joined the faculty at the School of Veterinary Medicine, University of California, Davis, where he currently is professor of small animal medicine and director of Small Animal Clinical Services in the VMTH. Dr. Nelson’s area of expertise lies in the arena of small animal endocrinology. His research is clinically based with a focus on diabetes mellitus, hypothyroidism, and diseases of the adrenal gland in dogs and cats. He has authored numerous research manuscripts and book chapters, and has co-authored two textbooks, Canine and Feline Endocrinology and Reproduction with Dr. Edward Feldman and Small Animal Internal Medicine with Dr. Guillermo Couto. He has lectured extensively nationally and internationally.
